We hear from parents all the time who are feeling exhausted, disheartened, and hopeless.
It’s so hard! Jenna makes it so damn hard to love her. She makes me feel like I’m a bad parent – in fact, she tells me I am all the time. Why do I keep trying when I’m treated like this?
Because it’s right. It’s what Jenna needs. You’re her mom and even if she makes it hard, you’ll still love her. (Even when you want to walk out the door and never look back).
Our kids fight against what they need because it’s scary to be cared for by an adult. An adult can hit them, embarrass them, or worst of all, disappear. They know this to be true – they’ve experienced it first-hand. It’s too much to risk feeling this pain again, so they shut us out.
It’s hard because it’s right.
Jenna needs Mom to prove she’s worth loving and fighting for, no matter what. Every obstacle you overcome and every storm you weather is one more step towards helping her trust you. She can trust that you’re not going to hit, embarrass, or leave her. You’re not going to hurt her. You’re in it for the long haul and we need to help her believe it.
